There is no nice setting you can check to prevent this behavior, which is sad to say as it would be an awesome thing to have ! This occurs because once a layout is left & returned to, all the portals on the layout reset their vertical scroll position, so the selected contact which may be halfway down the portal list, is invisible when the portal is returned to the top of the scroll position.
